Sugar union boss jeered by ex-workers
The meeting was organised by Couva South MP, Kelvin Ramnath, and included former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj at the Couva South constituency office at Camden Road, Couva, on Thursday evening.
The meeting, which was attended by hundreds of former sugar workers, became rowdy after Indarsingh was invited to address the ex-workers on both issues, which are currently before the High Court – pension payment and land distribution.
The invitation for Indarsingh to address the gathering was met with vociferous objections from the ex-sugar workers.
One representative immediately took the microphone and loudly expressed his objection to Indarsingh’s presence at the meeting, saying he was a “disgrace” and “traitor” to the workers’ cause.
“We don’t want him here. He is not welcome here because he did nothing to help the workers when they were closing down Caroni Ltd,” he added.
However, Maharaj jumped to Indarsingh’s defence and told the crowd that Indarsingh should be allowed to finish his presentation.
Indarsingh was then allowed to continue. He pledged renewed commitment to the former sugar workers.
Maharaj told the ex-workers that all of the necessary legal machinery had been put in place to force the Government to honour it’s commitments in their VSEP packages.
