New Moka green a unique test
After four months, during which a temporary green was used, the 115-yard, par-three hole will now present a unique test to the country’s golfers.
The architectural design and supervision was handled by PB Dye of the internationally famous Florida-based golf company PB Dye Incorporated, and ably assisted by Mike Davis, Vedath Singh (course superintendent) and his crew. The project involved a full reconstruction package, including collars and greenside bunkers, utilising the latest technology and highest quality material, grass and Guyana’s sand.
The 14th green was also restored by a resurfacing process and that too was recently brought back into play after a two-month closure.
These projects are part of St Andrew’s overall plan to completely renovate and restore all 18 greens over a two-year timeline. In addition, the course will also be replacing the 30-year-old watering system by a modern state-of-the-art electronically-controlled irrigation facility.
The new 15th green is in superb condition and, although the 15th hole is the shortest of the Championship course, it presents an additional test, with a wrap-around sand bunker at the front.
And the St Andrew’s Golf Club will be hosting the second edition of the Stephen Ames Cup in late July.
