Hit-and-miss World Cup presentation
My question is really inconsequential if local officials are proceeding only to keep the natives in rum and curry — that is to say appease the more vocal cultural groups and gain or maintain political currency.
The question also becomes irrelevant if the outcome of exercises in Germany ghettoises the export of our cultural resource, ie to make cultural presentations serve only as a rallying point for citizens from around the world, as West Indian carnivals tend to do. Scientific research leading to proper choices is important if we wish to lure the right people to our shores. It also protects against any cries of discrimination.
I recall a few years ago, TIDCO, the former tourism and industrial development authority, in attempting to provide a truly equitable distribution of cultural ware to sizable groups of German visitors at the time, unwittingly offended the sensibilities of many of these visitors who scrambled for cover from some presentations, so sensitive were their audio faculties. Perhaps these disciplined visitors have since come around to our way of viewing the world.
But will any local official authorities engage in purposeful research on our performance in Germany, except to return home and say with asinine confidence we achieved our objective (to gallery), and that a great time was had by all?
Casting a wide net of inappropriate but politically correct cultural performances in the hope that a hit-and-miss approach will develop some positive outcome is not at all part of the German psyche with real disposable income.
It is regrettable but predictable that the non-cultural commercial interests in our country have not as voraciously and copiously presented a different ware in this regard.
