African prisoners delay protest

Commissioner of Prisons John Rougier told Newsday on Monday that he had no problems with the 13 prisoners, and based on his information, everything has been put in place for the deportation of the prisoners by the end of the week.

He said that the African prisoners went out for air Monday, and did not fuss when their time was up.

Rougier said that his officers have been trained to provide counselling and deal with the concerns of the prisoners in a bid to avoid any violent behaviour from the prisoners.

The prisoners have been incarcerated for the past ten months and claimed that they are suffering in prison.

They all want to return to their respective countries but added that the authorities have not given them an exact date when they will be deported.

Recently, the prisoners took part in a hunger strike and had planned to refuse to re-enter their cells Monday after going out for air.
