Shaka’s dad home alone

GEORGE HISLOP, father of TT goalkeeper Shaka Hislop was “jubilant” with his son and the Soca Warriors’ performance at the 2006 World Cup match against Sweden yesterday. He said the game would be one to stay with the TT people for a long time.

Hislop (Shaka) was tested several times as the Swedes made several attempts to score against TT and save themselves from embarrassment. However, it was not to be and the game ended in a draw 0-0.

In an interview, the senior Hislop, a retired magistrate, told Sunday Newsday his wife and the rest of the family were in Germany. He watched the game alone at the family home in Diamond Vale and admitted that “like everyone else” he shared in the tense moments during the match.

“I was relieved afterwards,” he said.

His son replaced injured keeper Kelvin Jack.

Although Shaka seemed nervous at the start, Hislop said, “He was not expected to play. They called on him and right away he had to gather himself and then settle down, it took him a little while I suppose.”

Hislop said the team looked like they were having fun and he expects a more composed performance now that they have gotten over the first game.

“This one will stay with us for a while,” he said with pride.

Hislop was collecting congratulations from friends and neighbours following the game. He said he was expecting a call from his wife in Germany “as soon as she gets her breath back”.

He told Newsday he did not travel because he preferred to stay at home and watch the games on television.
