Yorke’s mom happy with rewards

GRACE YORKE, mother of Trinidad and Tobago Football team captain, Dwight Yorke, said yesterday she was satisfied with the special awards/gifts presented to her son and other members of the Soca Warriors following their historic participation in the World Cup, and stressed they should be grateful and give praise for the gesture by the Government.

“That is better than none; they could have got nothing. That is plenty money to me,” Ms Yorke told Newsday from the Yorke’s family home at Canaan, Tobago, yesterday afternoon. “They should be very thankful and give praise for it. But they really worked hard,” she observed.

At the same time, Ms Yorke questioned whether the Soca Warriors would be rewarded in any way by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA).

“What about the Football Association? So they ain’t getting nothing from the football Association?” The TT football captain’s mother asked, quickly adding that she was only curious and not intent on creating a controversy. She explained that she was at church on Saturday night when the awards were presented to her son and other members of the team during a rally at the Hasely Crawford Stadium — and was not really clear on what her son had received as she was given conflicting information with some people telling her that he had been given $2 million.

It was explained to her that the TT football captain had been rewarded with $1 million in unit shares at Unit Trust, $250,000 in cash, the Chaconia Medal Gold (like other members of the team), and had been appointed Ambassador of Sports for TT.

The other members of the team it was noted, apart from the Chaconia Medal Gold, received $750,000 in unit shares at Unit Trust and $250,000 in cash. “They should all be glad; the boys did work hard to get where they did,” Ms Yorke asserted.
