Bandits strike at jewelry store

The incident occurred at about 11.30 am while customers were making purchases. According to police reports, the bandits ran into the store and announced a hold-up. The bandits kept both customers and attendents at bay by brandishing their guns.

The bandits ordered the employees to fill a black bag with the jewels which were on display for sale in several showcases in the store.

At the time of the hold-up, dozens of shoppers, predestrians and motorists were making their way along the busy High Street and were unaware of the robbery taking place inside the jewelry store. With the bag filled with precious metal, the bandits ran out of the store and escaped. Gold bracelets, bangles, chains, rings and ID bands were taken by the bandits. This is the second jewelry heist to take place in south Trinidad this week. On Sunday, burglars broke into JJ’s Jewelry Store which is located within walking distance from the Princes Town Police Station and made off with $2 million in jewelry and cash. The burglars in the JJ’s Jewelry Store heist, are believed to have used a blow-torch to cut open an iron safe to get to the jewelry.

Up to late yesterday, no arrests had been made in both incidents and detectives have not ruled out the possibility that the two heists may have been carried out by the same group of criminals. Princes Town and San Fernando CID detectives are continuing investigations.
