Montrose Govt dominates exam

Heading the Montrose list was Javed Rahaman who tied for eighth place with four pupils from Atwell’s Education Centre, Curepe Presbyterian, Tacarigua Presbyterian and St Paul’s AC Schools. Rahama begins the new school year at Presentation College, Chaguanas.

Close on Montrose’s heels was Exchange Presbyterian School, Couva, where 14 pupils made it into the top list, including Fahim Kothdiwala and Prianka Ramlogan who tied for third. There was a tie for the top SEA pupils — Newtown Boys’ RC’s Jesse Benjamin and Jade Pariag, of Brothers Presbyterian in Williamsville.

In the new term, Kothdiwala and Ramlogan will take up their places at Presentation College, Chaguanas and Holy Faith Convent, Couva, respectively.

A consistent performer, Grant Memorial Presbyterian School, of San Fernando, had ten placings with Vaasha Ramnarine sharing the fifth highest mark in the exam. She will be attending Naparima Girls’ High School.

Holy Faith Preparatory School (St Monica’s) in Port-of-Spain, Princes Town Presbyterian and St Gabriel’s Girls’ RC in San Fernando all had eight pupils each on the list while San Fernando Muslim TML and Curepe Presbyterian had seven. Securing six places each were St Joseph’s Girls’ RC and Newtown Girls’ RC in Port-of-Spain, and Dayanand Memorial Vedic in Penal gained five. There were two placings of interest on the list. One was Toni Lovell of Scarborough RC, the only student from a school in Tobago to be placed. She will be attending Bishop’s High School in Tobago.

The other pupil was Aqilah Hosein who sat the exam as a private candidate but will be taking a seat at the Naparima Girls’ High School. Ninety-five schools gained places on the list which was dominated by those in South Trinidad with 32 education centres.

In the eastern region, 24 schools, in districts from Barataria to Sangre Grande, top scored, followed by 22 in Central Trinidad, 15 from Port-of-Spain, and one school in Tobago.

In the national performance by subject areas, 13,424 out of the 18,719 students who sat the exam obtained a mark of over 51 percent in Language Arts while 5,295 fell below average. In the mathematics exam, 12,323 students were over the 51 percent mark, while 6,396 scored a lower percent.

For the Creative Writing exam 15,327 had marks of ten and over out of 20, with 3,392 below average.
