Dudley’s Girl gives gallop reminder

The daughter of Smart Strike/Still Proceeding from Gerard Ferreira stables, has not raced since winning a 1100 metres maiden event, her second start, went over 1000 metres in a very smart one minute 02.79 seconds.

The “Midsummer” is the second jewel in the local racing triple tiara and will be run off on August 1.

Dudley’s Girl gallop was the only bit of fast work on a chilly morning at Santa Rosa, with the few horses seen out doing mainly pace gallops, with racing taking a holiday on Saturday, resuming on July 15.

But Sara’s Music who is on course for the triple crown after winning the Bookmakers Association Guineas on Indian Arrival Day, May 30 last, looked very keen in a 400 metres gallop.

This gelding from the Robert Maharaj barn, appeared to relish the underfoot conditions and was begging for his head despite the time of 29.14 seconds.

Meanwhile, for the first time this year, apprentice Nela Mohammed had a blank day at Santa Rosa Park.

The 18-year-old rider, current runaway leader on the jockeys standings with 29 winning rides, could only manage one second and a third place finish in six rides on the nine-race programme on Saturday last.

But challengers for the jockeys title Gary Laban although having two winners, moved to 19 victories, ten back of Mohammed.

Current champion, Venezuelan Wilmer Galviz had one winner and a dead heat on Saturday and now has 18 1/2 winners to his credit.

From as early as this month, July, the apprentice title seems to be a lock for Mohammed who lead nearest challenger Christopher Jadoo (eight) by 21.
