Windball ‘Test’ cricket in August
Keisha David, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Trinidad and Tobago’s Windball Cricket Association (TTWCA) yesterday announced that the competition is aimed at the overall development of the sport.
Twelve teams from as many sub-divisions in Trinidad and Tobago will bid for honours on August 20 at Constantine Park, Tunapuna for prize money totalling $100,000.
According to David the best team from each region— 11 from Trinidad and one from the sister-isle— will receive funding for the tournament and all the players will have to do is play.
David said teams will be outfitted with uniforms and will receive travelling expenses to the tournament venue and back.
The budget will also cover fees for umpires, prizes which will be revealed at a coming press briefing soon, and advertisements. There is also expected to be refreshments and other forms of entertainment for the players and officials for the one-day tournament.
Each team will consist 13 players and two other officials likely to a scorer and a team manager.
David said that while windball cricket has been recognised in this country there has been limited growth and therefore this competition is an attempt to push the game forward.
She revealed her association has in fact been working closely with the various leagues to enhance the development of the sport.
She pointed out that the TTWCA has given out grants to the different leagues— 25 in all— to conduct their play-offs annually.
This money she said was made possible from Government who has recognised the importance of the game.
David said the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs has contributed $400,000 towards windball cricket which has helped in its overall development.
From the amount the TTWCA worked on certifying and training umpires, as well as holding seminars.
Meanwhile the TTWCA will also host the 2006 edition of the National Under-16 Windball Cricket Tournament which targets schools.
The competition will be held at Macoya on July 17 and between 15-17 teams are expected to take part.
Defending champions Kings Juniors have already confirmed their participation and along with runners-up Arranjuez Sports Club will head the line-up.
The winners will get a championship trophy and gold medals.
According to David the league has a budget of $12,000 of which Government provides half.
The league specifically targets secondary schools but invitations are also extended to community teams within the required age bracket.
Initially the competition was held at the Eastern Regional Indoor Sports Complex in Tacarigua but has being shifted to the Constantine Park this year.
