New police unit on Lara Promenade

On Monday, Newsday reported that the old unit’s lights were not functioning and the toilet was not flushing.

Officers claimed they had complained to senior officers about the problems associated with the unit, but said their pleas for relief went unnoticed. They then threatened to walk out of the unit if nothing was done. They also complained that only two officers are assigned to the mobile unit because of a manpower shortage, and this made it impossible to deal with reports from the public. Police Commissioner Trevor Paul admitted that there were ten reports of robberies on the Brian Lara Promenade in June.

However, Paul did not provide statistics on the number of robberies at the promenade from January to May. On Monday, on the heels of the Newsday report, Paul arranged for the mobile unit to be replaced with a new one. The old unit was replaced by a new one on Thursday.

Officers attached to the unit thanked Newsday for the report which prompted swift response from the Police Service executive.
