Honours for Max

Richards who is a former Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of UWI’s St Augustine Campus is the fourth awardee to be conferred with the degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) at the St Augustine grounds, alongside renowned Trinidadian economist Lloyd Best, recognised by Caricom for his sterling contribution to intellectual advancement in the region.

Retired politician George Price would also be bestowed with the LLD degree at the St Augustine campus after he was recognised by the Belize Government for his active role in electoral politics, having entered the arena in 1947 and leading the country to independence in 1981. Receiving her award at the said campus would also be Jamaica Kincaid, a Harvard lecturer and writer for the past 20 years with The New Yorker Magazine, one of the only two women to receive the prestigious honorary degree.

St Lucian businesswoman and CEO Charmaine Gardner is carded to collect her degree at the university’s Cave Hill Campus. Gardner served her country admirably in both the public and private sectors as a means of promoting strategic initiatives for human resource development and has received many honours of which this would be her highest.

Jazz composer, Canadian-born Oscar Peterson, the winner of four grammys and retired Judge Sir Frederick Smith are also pegged for LLDs in reference to their related contributions in culture and law.

Last on the list of recipients at Cave Hill, is Sir Leroy Trotman who served in several committees of the International Labour Organisation. Five eminent persons are also to be awarded honorary doctorates at two separate graduation ceremonies to be held at the Mona Campus, Jamaica.

These include Roman Catholic Priest, Father and Missionary Richard Ho Leung best known for his work in helping the homeless and poor and Maroon leader Colonel Collin LG Harris who was instrumental in creating awareness in the then Jamaican government in 1972, as a way of highlighting the struggle of Maroon fighter and leader “Nanny” who is now one of the country’s most famous historic national heroes. Grenadian national Justice Dr L Dolliver Nelson, American professor Sydney Mintz and Belizean Governor General Sir Colville N Young would be given honorary degrees with respect to their significant roles in law, anthropological research and musical education.
