Scarborough Hospital at a standstill

Work on the hospital began in 2002, with a deadline of March last year.

Contacted about the project Health Minister John Rahael said he could not comment because arbitration was still going on and lawyers were involved. He said that the process was “going for some time.”

The Ag General Manager of NIPDEC, Wendy Ali, yesterday said she also could not comment because arbitration was taking place and it was “subject to a confidentiality agreement.”

The $134 million hospital has experienced cost overruns. US company Turner International was brought in to work with Nipdec and the architect, Santec.

Last October Rahael said negotiations were taking place to “disengage” the contractor.

He attributed problems being experienced at the site to insufficient boorings being done and the use of old designs. Rahael said the designs used were from the 1990’s and services such as a dialysis unit were not included.
