UNC FINALISES LOCAL GOVT LIST

UNC Ag chairman, Vasant Bharat, said the meeting, which was held at Rienzi Complex, Couva, was also convened to finalise the Opposition party’s list of nominees for aldermen. Bharat, who also holds the position as chairman of the committee, said that the party had received a number of late applications from perspective candidates willing to be nominated as councillors and aldermen. He said the meeting was to determine whether the committee would consider screening the late applications.

Meanwhile mayors and chairmen of the Regional and City Corporations were also summoned to a meeting at the Port-of-Spain offices of the Ministry of Local Government, to finalise the dates for the election of aldermen and swearing-in of mayors and chairmen of the various corporations. A release from the Ministry of Local Government stated that the Point Fortin Borough Corporation, and the San Fernando City Corporations will swear-in their mayors, Victor Mitchell, and Kenneth Ferguson on Thursday July 27. The chairmen for the Tunapuna/Piarco ; Sangre Grande; Siparia and Princes Town Regional Corporations will also be sworn in on Thursday July 27.

On Tuesday July 25, the Mayor of Port-of-Spain City Corporation, as well as the Chairman of the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation will be sworn-in.

On Friday 21, the mayors of the Arima and Chaguanas Borough Corporation as well as the chairmen of the Diego Martin, and Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation’s will be sworn-in. The Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation, (MRCRC), chairman will swear in a new chairman on Monday, July 24, while the chairman of the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation will be sworn-in on July 26.
