UNC women want Bas back

This will be the key motion to be tabled at an emergency meeting set for Saturday. Panday who is out on bail pending appeal of his jail term after he was found guilty of failing to report his London bank account to the Integrity Commission, was due to return home last evening following an extended stay abroad. However, problems with Panday’s flight have delayed his return.

This motion comes on the heels of a previous motion calling for a vote of no-confidence in political leader Winston Dookeran, by the party’s national executive committee. The no-confidence issue will be debated at the emergency session carded for the Couva South constituency office from 1 pm.

UNC deputy political leader Austin Jack Warner said these resolutions are aimed at strengthening the party in time for General Elections. The Opposition has been fragmented into two main bodies — one comprising Dookeran supporters and the other made up of loyalists of Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Warner at the time was addressing a public meeting at School Trace in New Grant on Monday night. He said while the party was divided among itself, the country was “teetering” on the brink of disaster and it was now up to the party’s supporters to put an end to the internal squabbling and restore the country’s rule of law.

“You must go there and support the two motions: one, ask Mr Panday to assume chairmanship of the party and secondly, move a vote of no-confidence in Dookeran,” Warner said.

Warner added there was still a place for Dookeran within the party, “But not as political leader.”
