Probe into Oropouche fire

Owner Deokie Reynold, 47, lived upstairs the restaurant, but according to a fire report, she was not at home at the time of the blaze.

The police report stated that about 3.35 pm, fire officers from Siparia Fire Station, received a telephone call informing them that the building, a wood and concrete two-storey structure, was on fire.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers quickly extinguished the flames. The report stated that the fire started on the roof of the building. The cause of the fire was not yet ascertained up to yesterday and police, fire and TTEC officials revisited the scene to continue their investigations.

Police believe a bedroom on the upstairs floor and the bar area in the restaurant on the ground floor, were destroyed in the blaze.

In another fire incident, a Barrackpore man was left homeless after fire completely gutted his one-bedroom house. The fire occurred about 3 am on Monday at Heywood Trace in Lower Barrackpore.

According to reports, Balram Ramdass, 56, was asleep at his home when he was awakened by the smell of smoke. The report stated Ramdass quickly ran outside the house and attempted to douse the blaze by throwing buckets of water inside the bedroom. Investigations are continuing.
