Jamila is Couva’s queen
In her first appearance on stage the winner told the audience that Sierra Leone means Lion Mountains with about 14 different ethnic groups making up the over 1.3 million population.
Other contestants in the Senior Queen contest were - Krystal Harrilal (Guinea); Colleen Burnett (Nigeria) and Avril Fortune (Liberia).
The Junior Queen title went to Makela Johnson , who represented the Congo. Johnson triumphed over Kim Lee (Senegal); Tamika Pascall ( South Africa), Stacia Pariag (Zimbabwe) and Sharyn Joseph (Mali).
The African Queen event was the culmination of a week of activities at Gilbert Park organised by the (CESC), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Gender Affairs.
Public relations officer of the group, Sheila Dottin, thanked all artistes who performed to huge crowds and said that “next year the celebrations would be conducted on a bigger scale.”
Culture Minister of the Nigerian High Commission, Dankano Kakshak, delivered the feature address. He spoke about the achievements of many African women and compared them with women who have been serving in high offices all over the world.
