Drinks for new British Council Director

High Commissioner Ron Nash, Pred Evans, the guest of honour and first arrivals seated themselves in the arbour, some on “directors”-style chairs, others on the bench around the table.

As a senior citizen who has long abandoned high heels for cocktails and drinks parties, I was more that grateful to be able to sit and chat, to put my glass of wine down on the table while helping myself to quiche, wantons, bangers and other tidbits. Too besides, the round table encouraged sensible conversation rather than the usual exchanges of pleasantries.

The hot topic that evening was, of course, the President’s speech to the nation and whether some of us should adjourn to the residence to watch the speech on television, but the atmosphere and the company were so pleasant most decided to read all about it (plus the opinions of legal pundits) in Newsday the next day.

Latecomers had more opportunity to chat with the new arrivals than those speculating on the fate of the nation in the arbour, but had, perforce, to stand.

Newsday welcomes Mr Evans and hopes he enjoys his tour of duty in Trinidad.
