Kamla: No UNC challenge to acting CJ

Speaking with Newsday prior to the party’s national congress in Couva yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said the UNC has not discussed taking any legal action to challenge Hamel-Smith’s appointment and any matters of that nature may be left up to “the parties involved.” She also indicated this appointment and matters pertaining to Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma were not on the agenda for discussion at yesterday’s national congress.

President George Maxwell Richards, acting in accordance with Section 103 of the Constitution appointed Hamel-Smith to act as Chief Justice until all legal matters pertaining to Sharma were determined.

Sunday Newsday reported that attorneys for the President and the State have put Registrar of the Court Evelyn Petersen on notice for any injunction that could be filed by Sharma’s attorneys to frustrate the decisions taken by the President.
