NJAC honours the elders

The occasion was at NJAC’s Open House where the organisation honoured several elders and presented entertainment throughout the day. Daaga was moved by Brigo’s calypso and could not resist speaking to the audience. He told them that people are claiming “fame” for the celebration of Emancipation yet they have not mentioned NJAC, Ome or even Daaga.

“In the past we celebrated Emancipation in the square where thousands would gather and listen to us but we found that something was missing. People were not communicating so we decided to take Emancipation to the people and for years we celebrated with people in La Brea, Point Fortin, Mayaro, Sangre Grande, Arima and other places,” Daaga said.

According to Daaga, “Because of our efforts over 30 villages and towns in Trinidad and Tobago now celebrate Emancipation. And we will not stop until Emancipation becomes a household word like Christmas.

“People in Trinidad must not only celebrate the birth of Christ but celebrate and commemorate the thousands of ancestors who died for them to be free today and on this day they should do something to remember them.

“Always keep in mind Emancipation is about the family,” ended Daaga.

In keeping with its tradition NJAC honoured Bishop Eudora Thomas (who was unable to be at the function because of illness), Brother Andrew Small, masman Jason Griffith and Brother Sam Phills.

Each honouree was presented with a gift, certificate, basket of fruits and a cheque. They were also entertained by several young calypsonians who rose to the occasion.

NJAC will continue its Emancipation activities tonight with at JFK Auditorium and continuing until September.
