Piarco protest put on hold

The protest action began on Thursday night when all 38 officers assigned to the night shift staged a sick out, prompting police officers and soldiers to assume duty at Piarco.

Estate Police Association (EPA) Secretary, Carolia Cadogan, indicated that the EPA was satisfied with the fact that a meeting with the AATT would be held on Monday to discuss a new collective agreement. Until then airport security is expected to carry on as usual.

A media release from the AATT yesterday stated that police officers and military staff will, “continue to provide support services as the situation warrants.”

Cadogan however said that she was told that due to the return of regular security staff, the police and soldiers would have left the airport before last night.

When asked by Sunday Newsday what the EPA expects to gain from Monday’s talks, Cadogan replied, “we would like that management pay whatever outstanding monies and look into taking on new staff.”

She added that the Association would like to have the many approved AATT recruits trained and brought on staff as soon as possible to allow the present workers to have their, “necessary rest and time off.”
