Weigh consequences of our actions

What are the authorities to do? It is difficult to put armed policemen at every corner in Trinidad and Tobago to apprehend anyone who has murderous intentions. But what can be done is to find ways to counsel the young people in this land on how to handle the question of conflict resolution. It is interesting to note that the killings of two young women were, according to news reports, both concerned with a dispute over a “lover”.

Surely this is one that could have been avoided by timely conflict intervention. But another equally important issue is the role that the church has to play in the lifestyle of our people, especially the youths.

It is obvious that even the churches are neglecting this crisis which has arisen in the society. We tend to throw all the responsibility for the welfare of the state in the hands of the government, but we must recognise that to a very significant extent we carry the responsibility for the welfare of our country in our hands.

We must take time to weigh the consequences of our actions before we commit ourselves to them.
