Calypso Girls n-ballers win

Trinidad and Tobago cruised to a comfortable 56-34 victory over St Kitts-Nevis in the second match of the evening while Canada outplayed the United States 42-25 to lower the curtain on Day 2 of the eight-team qualifiers.

Goal shooter Janelle Barker scored 37 of 47 shots for Trinidad and Tobago for a 79 percent average while goal attack Lystra Zamore contributed 19 goals from 28 attempts (68 percent).

For the losing St Kitts-Nevis side, goal shooter Shantal Latasha Isles shot at 73 percent, sinking 19 of 26 shots and goal attack Rhonda Thompson nailed 15 of 25 attempts for a 60 percent average.

The Trinidadians, who won 22 regional titles between 1947 and 1992 but have been winless in the last decade while rebuilding their team, led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Afterwards, they steadily increased their advantage progressing to 28-16 at half-time and 43-28 at the end of the penultimate quarter with experienced captain Simone Bowen-Sandy, orchestrating plays at wing attack with support from centre Rhonda John.

The Leeward Islands, who were crowned Caribbean champions in 1973 and 1978, had their best spell in the penultimate quarter, scoring 12 goals to 15 by their opponents but were limited to a mere six goals in the final session.

In the evening’s last match, which was littered with mid-court turn-overs by both teams, Canada emerged winners by 17 goals after gaining quarter leads of 11-8, 24-12 and 33-19.

Goal attack Marilyn Hope spearheaded Canada’s shooting effort with 24 goals from 30 shots for an 80 percent performance while goal shooter Sabrina Versteeg only scored 18 of her 39 attempts for a modest 46 percent effort.

The Americans used four shooters with Taneisha Morrison sinking all eight shots she took in the last two quarters after replacing Dailian McArthur, who had netted eight of 11 attempts.

Bobbeth Morgan also converted five of nine shots and Morreen Logsdon added four of six shots as they shared the goal attack position.
