‘Women taxi drivers discriminated against’

Another member said, “It is a norm in the country to see male taxi drivers. Women are thought to be terrible drivers when the truth is women get into fewer accidents hence the reason why women pay less for insurance.”

Another topic that was discussed was whether there would ever be a female President or female Prime Minister. One woman said, “It is a great possibility in the near future that it could happen and when it does it would allow women to have more confidence in themselves.”

The group also discussed the Association’s plans for the second half of the year. They have put together a “three step project” that aims to increase the engagement and knowledge of women’s rights issues. The three steps of the project will be “react, learn and act.”

Tara Ramoutar, national representative for CAFRA, said the women’s movement has been struggling to get Government to agree to the gender policy.

“A lot needs to be done in the society, women must not be seen as the primary care givers of children. Women’s rights should not be tied to anyone else’s,” she said.
