Trini strangled, stabbed in NY

Gloria Boney, a retired nanny was discovered in her Crown Heights home at 12.10 am after her daughters could not reach her by telephone and called 911. “I’m shocked. I’m scared,” said one of her daughters Maria Boney, 49, a nurse at Woodhull Hospital, who arrived at her mom’s apartment at 11.30 pm on Saturday, but could not get inside.

“I’m so confused, I haven’t slept,” said Boney who lived in her mother’s building on Union Street until moving out a month ago. “I have no idea who did this.” An autopsy revealed the churchgoing matriarch was strangled and sustained deep stab wounds to her head, according to the medical examiner’s office.

There were no signs of forced entry and nothing appeared to have been stolen, cops said.

The dead woman’s relatives said they grew concerned about 2 pm on Saturday, when she failed to respond to phone calls from the parents of her three-year-old great-grandson Jelani, whom she had agreed to baby-sit that day.

Maria Boney said she got off work at 11 pm and went directly to her mom’s apartment, but found that her keys would not open the door. That’s when she called cops. Neighbours in the four-storey walkup said they’d heard no unusual sounds coming from Boney’s apartment.

The victim’s relatives said Boney moved to New York from Trinidad in 1990. She was found face down and fully clothed shortly after midnight Sunday in her Crown Heights apartment, police said.

“She was very fun-loving, caring and kind,” said neighbour Anna Williams, 32. “I don’t know her to have enemies.” Boney, a widow, made frequent visits to Trinidad and Tobago where three of her six children live.
