Welcome to the ALUTRINT

The town was very much alive with lots of commerce. Fishing was done and there were big companies like Van Leer, Texaco and others where lots of people from throughout Trinidad and Tobago came and were able to get meaningful employment, even people from other islands, especially St Vincent and Grenada.

They were also able to get jobs and eventually settle and raise families. There were also about 33 Chinese owned business places, where almost anything for human consumption could be bought, but during the 70s and 80s some of the companies and the Chinese immigrants as well, packed up and left.

This left the area with a great social and financial depression, which meant unemployment and poverty. La Brea was almost drained save for the Pitch Lake which is still fully operational. Thank God.

Today, there is the coming of ALUTRINT to the La Brea area and the vast majority of the residents of La Brea and environs, including myself have welcomed ALUTRINT with open arms, and are sure that they will bring about come prosperity to our village.

Already, they have established strong ties with sporting, cultural and social groups offering help where they can.

I have noted that, most of the people who are opposed to the establishment of this factory are people who do not live in this village and have never offered to assist in any way.

Because of ALUTRINT, there is this very visible interest by young people to empower themselves, educationally and otherwise.

As I see it, ALUTRINT seems to be just the beginning of some positive developments in La Brea. Again I say, positively, Welcome ALUTRINT.
