Woman forgives husband for chopping

“He made a mistake,” Marsha Ramjewan, 31, told Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar at the Couva Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The magistrate, without hesitation, dismissed the case against Kazim Mohammed, 38, for maliciously wounding Ramjewan. And as the couple walked out the court, they stopped and openly embraced each other, Ramjewan clutching her injured hand wrapped in a rag.

Ramjewan had reported to police that at about 7 pm, on Tuesday, Mohammed chopped her on the hand and face at their Abdool Trace home during an argument.

Mohammed, a truck driver, was charged with the offence. He pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the court on Friday. Attorney Daril Giles told the magistrate that Mohammed’s wife wanted to drop the charge against him.

Ramjewan, who had a bandage on the left side of her face and also on the left hand, was ordered by Ayers-Caesar to take the witness stand. Ramjewan said her husband made a mistake and she did not wish to give evidence. She said she had been in common-law relationship with Mohammed for four years and intends to stay with him.

“Accidents happen. We work out everything,” Ramjewan said with a smile.

Ayres-Caesar then told Mohammed he was free to go. But when they looked at each other and hugged in full view of the court, the magistrate responded: “Take that outside.”
