Watchman dies of head injuries

Lutchman, a father of two, was cremated at Mosquito Creek on Sunday.

His wife, Bernice, who is blind, had been praying for her husband’s miraculous recovery since his fall on August 7. However, her worse fears were realised on Thursday at about 6 am when her husband of almost 29 years succumbed to his injuries. Bernice told Newsday that Lutchman’s spine was broken in four places, and he also suffered a fractured skull. Lutchman underwent emergency surgery at the Cocorite hospital for two blood clots in the head.

A tearful Bernice told Newsday yesterday that she has not been contacted or visited by officials from the company where her husband worked since the accident. “We are still waiting for someone to talk to us. Nobody from the company even came to extend their sympathy since he passed away,” Bernice, who suffers with glaucoma, sobbed.

Lutchman and his wife would have celebrated 29 years of marriage next month.

Lutchman was climbing a spiral staircase at the company’s Claxton Bay compound on August 7. An employee for more than 25 years, Lutchman was on his way to take up his position on a verandah on top of a building at the construction company.

Police said Lutchman fell 15 feet and hit the ground head first.

Employees came to his assistance and Lutchman was rushed to the Couva District Health Facility. He was then taken to the San Fernando General Hospital for additional treatment, and later transferred to the Cocorite medical institution for specialised treatment for head and spinal injuries.
