Roofs damaged in South storm

The roof of one house was completely blown off while the roofs of two other houses were severely damaged.

Officials at the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation yesterday told Newsday the incidents occurred at about 10.30 am.

The Borel Street home of Vernon George was left totally uncovered after the winds ripped the galvanise from the structure. George, his wife and four children are left in dire need of mattresses, food and drinking water,” according to a corporation official. “We have covered the top of the house with tarpaulins for now,” he added. The homes of Neru Ramoutar of Navet Village and Sidney Kenneth of Poole Valley Road were partially destroyed.

Speaking with Newsday yesterday, Ramoutar, a 75-year-old pensioner said he and his wife have managed to secure the remaining galvanise with rope that was given to him by his neighbour.

“I will buy the remainder of materials as soon as the weather permits, but I do not know when that will be,” said Ramoutar.

Corporation officials told Newsday residents should monitor how their houses are withstanding the inclement weather and advised that falling trees can pose a serious threat to human life.
