Unfair treatment of elderly widows

I am a widow in my late 70s and on medication for my heart problem and hypertension daily. Recently I applied to Social Services for old age pension but was disallowed, the reason being my monthly income exceeded $1,000. I receive a National Retirement Benefit of $1,000 and a Survivor Benefit of $302.17 for my deceased husband. I have paid Income Tax, National Insurance and Health Surcharge for almost half of my life but now that I am not in good health, old and a widow I am disallowed old age pension.

I was told that if I had a husband I would have been able to get it but not now as he is dead! Where is the logic? How can this be fair? Shall I go out and look for another husband so that I may be granted my old age pension?

Please someone, anyone help!
