Chamber hails Hassanali’s dignity

The TT Chamber of Industry and Commerce said it was “deeply saddened” by Hassanali’s passing. The Chamber said he emanated deep humility as a human being and exuded high moral standards as a professional. It said Hassanali believed in giving back to the community and published his book of speeches titled Teaching Words in 2003 in collaboration with Naparima Boys College.

The Chamber extended condolences to Hassanali’s wife, Zalayahar, and their children Khalid and Amena Hassanali-Sutton and their families.

The Downtown Owners and Merchants Association of TT (DOMA) described the former President as a “model of dignity and statesmanship in his role as President.”

It said those who interacted with him, during his tenure as both judge and President, always spoke highly of his wisdom and his sense of equity. DOMA said, “He was also highly regarded and recognised internationally and also by his Alma Mater at the University of Toronto in Canada.”

DOMA said TT has lost a distinguished citizen and servant who should be remembered for his contribution to the nation and as an outstanding citizen to the nation’s youths.

It extended sympathy to Mrs Hassanali whose quiet grace and composure was an example to all.

The Presbyterian Church of TT said it was saddened at the death of a dear brother and friend.

Moderator of the Synod, Rev Rawle Sukhu, said Hassanali will always be remembered for the exemplary life he lived which characterised the life-giving virtues of truth, kindness, compassion, humility, devotion and dedication to duty, and respect for God and humankind.

Sukhu said, “His faith in God as well as his forthrightness and objectivity were hallmarks of the simple life he lived.” He said Hassanali earned the respect and admiration of his peers and tutors as a student of Naparima College, San Fernando. He also had the distinction of being the only non-Presbyterian to serve on the administrative committees of Naparima and Hillview Colleges.

Sukhu extended “deepest condolences” to Hassanali’s wife Zalayhar, children, grandchildren, relatives and friends.

The Cooperative Credit Union League said the credit union movement is deeply indebted to Hassanali under whose stewardship the only Independent Senator from the Credit Union system was selected to serve in the Upper House. The league paid tribute to Hassanali’s humility and humour which characterised the character of a “dedicated President.”
