3 pilots fly Roger non-stop to Argentina
Roger and his mother Marcia, 46, who will donate a piece of her liver to save his life, arrived at the hospital at about 7 am yesterday. Ramnath, however, was unable to accompany them because of lack of space on the Lear Jet air ambulance which left Sunday night.
Roger had been warded at Port-of-Spain General Hospital where doctors diagnosed him with suffering from the rare Budd Chairi Syndrome — an uncommon condition which affects the liver. The family has initiated a drive to raise the $1.6 million needed for the operation, with Health Minister John Rahael and other prominent persons donating substantial sums.
Managing director of First Flight Air Ambulance Company, Joseph Bahadur, yesterday told Newsday that the preparation for Ramnath’s travel involved the use of three pilots, as the flight went non-stop to Argentina to make sure the patient arrived at the hospital on time.
Bahadur said, “Because of the severity of Ramnath’s condition, the aircraft could not stop, so three pilots were aboard together with a doctor, a nurse and medical equipment.”
Jaishwar said yesterday he was extremely disappointed that he could not travel with his son and wife, “but I am happy I am still going to join them.”
Jaishwar said he was unable to speak to his wife and son directly in Argentina, but learnt through consultant gastroenterologist, Dr Maria Bartholomew who diagnosed Roger’s condition, that they had arrived safely at the hospital.
Expressing thanks to Rahael and other good Samaritans, Jaishwar said he was also grateful to the First Flight Air Ambulance Company. Jaishwar said Bahadur accepted a promissory note written by Rahael, who asked him to fly Ramnath in advance and all expenses would be paid at a later date.
Family members are appealing to members of the public to make donations to a Republic Bank account — 180471584831.
