Writers’ course at National Library
WUTT president Dr Marina AO Maxwell will lecture and tutor in the field of novel writing through the Creative Writing course.
Maxwell has also announced the release of her new book entitled, TV Violence is Killing You, which has been based on her PhD research.
She continues work as a TV producer/writer, novelist, poet, journalist and communications lecturer.
The writing course, which encompasses some aspects of journalism, will introduce students to the mechanics and elements of fiction.
These are useful basics for effective feature writing. Members and others are asked to have the text Writing the Natural Way by G L Rico.
Among areas to be explored are “Language,” “Post Colonial Literature,” “Literary Devices,” and “Right and Left Hemi-sphere,” which is the subconsious function of the brain.
The course will also deal with “Imaging and Logical Structur-ing,” “Description,” “Charac-ters,” “Plots,” “Structuring” and “Basic Writing.”
Maxwell said this level of creative writing deals with the short story.
She noted that there is no such course available otherwise to the public, and it has proven popular and useful over the last five years it has been offered.
Maxwell’s book on “Tele-violence” will be available to the public within due course.
She said, “We need to know the basics of writing first,” and noted that far more local and relevant TV/theatre is needed to balance the destructive foreign fare in this country.
She encourages people to conceive and write the scripts. Saturday classes run from 3 to 6 pm.
