Il Modo D’Amore Classical treat for music lovers
The three performers are Ronald Samm, tenor, Fritz Nothnagel-Gurley, soprano and Enrique Ali, a piano accompanist.
Music director, June Nathaniel displays the brilliance, talent and skill of these Trinidadian performers in a programme of music from the operas La Traviata, Othello and Carmen and lieder from Brahms and Schubert. Voices of the Key Academy provide choral support.
Samm is a London based Trinidadian who has performed substantial roles in the world’s best known operas. Well recognised in England, Trinidad audiences will remember his outstanding performance in the Trinidad production Carnival Messiah.
Fritz Nothnagel Gurley, who lives in Trinidad, has performed as a principal in productions of The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, Carmen and The Merry Widow. She has complimented these appearances by recitals and concert performances both in Trinidad and abroad with invitations to perform in Ireland and the Caribbean.
Enrique Ali, pianist and accompanist, who is London based, has performed with Trinidad and Tobago’s leading classical singers, choirs and instrumentalists. He also directs the all-male Diamond Chorale, and the Pro Musica Vocal Ensemble and its co-founder with soprano Fritz Nothnagel-Gurley of the Classics at Twilight series of open air concerts in Trinidad.
Musical director June Nathaniel is a classically trained pianist and singer. In 1996 she returned home and established the Key Academy. Her most recent undertaking was the successful S’fumature d’Amore at the Simon Bolivar Auditorium in March.
The evening begins with Verdi’s famous opera, La Traviata — the rousing drinking song “Let Us Drink” and introduces the full cast. Then Samm sings one of the most beautiful arias from La Traviata “Parigi O Cara (Paris My Dear One)”.
Othello, another famous opera by Verdi, is also featured. First the love duet “Gia Nella Notte (Already in the night every sound is stilled)”, then Fritz Nothnagel Gurley sings the “Ave Maria” and Samm offers the equally beautiful “Ora e Per Sempre Addio (Now and Forever Goodbye)”.
Also on the programme are familiar pieces like “Love Unspoken” from Franz Lehar’s Merry Widow and the duet “C’est Toi” in the last scene of Bizet’s Carmen when Don Jose kills Carmen.
Wednesday’s concert is an opportunity for lovers of classical music to witness live performances by some of our best musicians.
Tickets are on sale at Queen’s Hall Box Office at $200 (House) and $150 (Balcony) for the general public. Special rates are available for Patrons of Queen’s Hall.
