Stop being insular

Insularity means not being open to change or new ideas or small mindedness. Therefore when we criticise the appointment of Gayle as captain and demand that Jaggernauth play in the series we show ourselves to be insular. The problem with island states is that they are all suspicious of each other and this leads to allegations of favouritism, false perceptions and other unsubstantiated claims of bias. As a result no matter whom the selectors choose for a match the choice will be met by claims of insularity which in our terms mean that the selectors are favouring certain islands and players over others.

Hopefully in the future the selection process will be more pellucid and players will be selected according to their records, the pitch conditions and the state of the series. I also dream that as a people we will become mature enough to accept that everyone from our particular region can’t play and that we will be able to criticise intelligently choices made based on facts, player records and documented evidence of bias instead of assumptions of bias and hearsay that don’t have empirical data to prove them correct. This will in no way stop accusations of insularity but it will mitigate them.
