Farewell for Errol McLeod
The union’s first vice president Ancil Roget, who is expected to take over the reigns of the “blue shirt army” — the name given to the union members - yesterday spoke of plans to celebrate Mc Leod’s retirement and his 21st anniversary as President General of the union today.
Mc Leod, who took over the union’s leadership from labour legend George Weekes, was said to have provided the union with “astute leadership.”
Roget said because of Mc Leod, the OWTU was recognised nationally and internationally as one of the most vibrant trade unions in the region.
David Abdulah, OWTU’s education officer, said today’s event will also serve as a “passing of the torch” to Roget.
Roget said while no-one could emulate Mc Leod, he was prepared to continue the work started by his leader in defending the rights of the working class.
“I am prepared to take on the world as previous leaders have done,” he said.
The two men were addressing members of the media at OWTU’s headquarters at Paramount Building, in San Fernando.
Historian Dr Susan Craig-James, Senator Chester Humphrey from Grenada and Guyanese trade unionist Dr Rupert Roopnarine are expected to speak at today’s event.
