TT junior cyclists dominate

The promising young pedal-pushers grabbed five of the six gold medals which were awarded on the first day of the three-day track event which has attracted competitors from Guyana, Suriname and Barbados.

The home team staked their claim for overall honours through outstanding performances from Abede Chalmers (Juniors 500m); Quincy Alexander (Juveniles); Justin Roberts (Tinymites); Jodi Goodridge (Women’s 200m); and Akinyi Cunningham (Women’s 500m).

The only team to make any dent in the Trinidad and Tobago domination was Barbados whose Shane Weekes and Jason Perryman finished one–two in the Men’s Under-21 500m ride.

Another Barbados cyclists, Rico Nurse, placed second to TT”s Alexander in the Juveniles grind while Geron Williams of Guyana finished fourth in the Juniors 500m.

Also contested on Wednesday were the qualifying rounds of the Flying 200m events with Barbadians Weekes and Perryman again finishing in tandem among the Under-21 men.

Leading the charge in this sprint event were TT pedal-pushers Chalmers (Juniors); Alexander (Juvenile) and Kwesi Brown (Tinymites).

Among the women Amzinga Commissiong landed two silver medals in the Flying 200m while Cunningham added a bronze in the Flying 200m to the gold she got in the 500m.

The 6th Junior Caribbean Gold Cup 200 is organised by Anthony “Bike Doctor” Commissiong whose Sports and Culture Promotions offer the only development programme for junior cyclists during the July-August school holidays.

Commissiong, a former national rider who is based in La Romaine, south Trinidad is being assisted in staging the meeting by the TT Cycling Federation, Arima Wheelers, Knight Riders, Rig Tech Sonics and the Arima Borough Corporation.

The competition continued yesterday evening and the track events will conclude today from 5.30 pm with the Olympic Sprint, Individual Pursuit and Points race in all categories.

Tomorrow the Road Race will be contested at 8 am from Demerara Road, Wallerfield and the curtain will come down on the championships on Sunday with the Arima Fest Criterium from 1.30 pm.
