Bajan Stabby is now a Trini favourite

“Bajan dialect is different from Trini dialect, so when you say wining, we say stabbing, jukking and wukking and that is what the song is really about,” he explained.

Bowen’s big hit was written five years ago but he did not release it then because he did not want it to interfere with his job at the time.

“For six years I choreographed and danced for a group called Stin Pooch Ink and when I worked with them they were just starting up and I did not want to leave the group so I put my music career on hold,” he said.

After the group grew and established permanent members, he decided to release the song.

“Stabby” was released in time for Crop Over last year and it did really well not only in Barbados but all over the Caribbean.

“I am so glad that it has done so well. Recently I won an award for Best New Artist at the Barbados Music Awards and I was also nominated for Tempo’s song of the year,” he said.

With his success he has travelled to Canada and New York and Manhattan.

“It has been really great so far, and coming to Trinidad for Carnival has been even better because the reception has been so overwhelming,” he said.

Bowen has already performed at two big fetes for the season, Fire Fete and Amnesia and was really caught off guard by the crowd’s response.

“These people were singing the song word for word, and some people do not even understand what I am saying but they did, I felt great about that,” he said.

“When I performed at Amnesia it was a different crowd, everybody was dressed up but they were still wukking up, it was good man,” he added.

As the Carnival season progresses he plans to perform at a few more fetes and a children’s show.

“My following is mostly kids and what showed me that was one time I was doing a show in Barbados and a little girl wanted to meet me so bad. And when she did she hugged me and told me she loved me and I told her I loved her too and I hugged her back and that girl cried. That was definitely one of my most touching moments,” Bowen explained.

The 25-year-old revealed that he would love to do a song with Bunji Garlin and Ricky T.

“That combination would be crazy, working with those two,” he said.

He credits Rupee, Alison Hinds, Edwin Yearwood, and Machel Montano for encouraging him in soca music.

“Those are my idols, the work they have done definitely got me involved into the whole soca thing,” he said.

Bowen who grew up in St Michael said that his family has been very encouraging with his career.

“My mom is a person who always goes to church and she told me that everybody has their talent and she encourages me to pray everyday,” he said.

Stabby De Guard is also a proud father of a four-year-old son.

“He is so proud of his daddy, everywhere he goes, he sings the song like he’s a big man. He goes to school and tells his friends that his daddy is Stabby,” he said while laughing.

If you have been lucky enough to see Stabby perform you would have noticed his muscular and fit tone.

When asked to reveal his fitness regime Bowen laughed and asked what regime.

“People do not believe me when I say it but I do not work out. All these abs is from chores growing up as a child. My father left when I was really young and I became the man of the house doing most of the chores,” he said.

He continued: “The most I do really is play football and do pushups but I cannot really say that I have a specific fitness regime. I laze around most of the time and I eat anything, I cannot give advice on how to get the perfect abs, I cannot tell you the perfect ab workout. I was basically born like this.”

His plans for the rest of the year is to travel and perfect his skill and work or writing more songs.

“I am really a songwriter and I have already begun writing two new songs,” he said.

Bowen is experiencing his first Trini Carnival and revealed he will be on the roads Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

“I am playing mas but I am uncertain with whom,” he said.

He thanked his family, friends and fans for all their support especially the Trinidadian fans.

“I know how hard it is for a new artist to get in the hearts of Trinis and they have welcomed me in theirs and I am thankful for that,” he said.
