Denise Belfon– soca royalty

1. What is your favourite thing about Carnival?

I like the fact that Carnival brings people together, and that is what I thrive on.

2. What songs are you liking for the season?

I’m really feeling, Skinny Fabulous’s song “Head Bad”, Faye-Ann Lyons-Alvarez “Meet Superblue” and “Heavy T Bumper”. I think she stands a great chance of winning the Groovy Soca Monarch, Road March and Soca Monarch. Destra’s “Sassyness” and “Bachannal” also “Hott” has a lot of potential to be a soundtrack for a movie and last but by no means least, Denise Belfon’s “Licks”, and “Obsessive Winers” by Destra, Denise and Alison Hinds.

3. What is your most memorable experience at a performance?

Performing for a sold out show in Toronto, seeing people actually fainting, throwing flowers, and crying for me.

4. With all your songs, which one is your absolute favourite?

My absolute favourite is “De Jammette”.

5. Describe yourself in one word?

Sensual.

6. What was your childhood dream?

To become an international star, from the age of seven.

7. What is your worst habit?

Taking care of everyone but myself.

8. What is your favourite food?

Soup, all kinds, and anything curried.

9. What are the things you cannot live without?

Prayers, prayers and more prayers.

10. Who do you admire most in your life?

My children, Daniel, Isabella and Cassandra.

11. What traits do you find most attractive in a mate?

When a man can be honest with himself first, he has to have a big heart, and he knows when to stop anything before things get out of hand. Oh! and not forgetting, when he can take the time to learn about his woman and really listen to her and their children, really listen!

12. What is the most interesting person, place, or thing that you have had the opportunity to meet, learn or experience?

St. Lucia – my bloodline on my father’s side is from there, originally from France, and I learnt that we are of royal lineage. I think that is so mind boggling, that when I did a trace it is really true.

13. What is an interesting facet of your personality that most people do not know about you?

I love children, and I do a lot of motivational speaking at primary and secondary schools in St. Lucia and here in Trinidad, also, I am really a home body that just has an outgoing personality.

14. If you had an opportunity to meet anyone in the world, who would it be?

Desmond Tutu.

15. What was your most embarrassing experience ever?

There was this time my pants got torn in the crotch and I performed to my heart’s content and wondered why people were only pointing at the area and it was my sister Keisha who came to my rescue.

16. What is your pet peeve?

People who do things, create a confusion and pretend not to know what they did; also, those that play self righteous and like to judge.

17. Do you have any regrets?

No regrets. The obstacles and life mishaps that I have encountered are the things that made me the strong person that I have become.

18. What is the one thing you would like to accomplish before you die?

I rather not say.

19. What is the best compliment you have ever received?

That I represent the full figured woman to the maximum but we are no longer fat or full figured, we are all fluffy.

20. What is your personal motto?

Team work makes the dream work and without God nothing is possible.
