Jam till J’Ouvert at Triangle

This annual event, brainchild of the late Simbhoonath Kumar, traditionally draws a huge audience each year. This year the fete is being organised by Kumar’s son, Shiva Maharaj. All the top names in chutney fans will entertain chutney all through the night and into Sunday morning.

Newly-crowned Chutney Soca Monarch Kenneth Salick, who is no stranger to the Triangle, will be doing his hit song “Radica” as well as some of his humourous chutney songs. He will share the stage with Groovy Soca finalists Lalchan “Hunter” Babwah, Patch and Mastamind and Ravi Bissembhar.

Maharaj told Newsday he organised the show because of requests from the many foreigners who frequent the club in search of chutney.

“While it has not been a year since my dad’s passing, I was skeptical whether I should start producing these shows but the demand was overwhelming and I am now ready to take over this task at the Triangle,” he said.

Popular singers Nadia Madoo and Devika Ram, well known for their Bollywood remixes will entertain the crowds during the early hours of the fete.

Nadia who is known for her renditions of uptempo folks songs originally recorded by Kanchan said she has prepared a lot of spicy tunes for this event.

“Folk songs are the sauce of all the spicy songs we hear now,” Nadia said, adding that local audiences will be amazed at the beautiful folks songs being remixed with bangra to give them a true Caribbean flavour. She also said she will be releasing several new songs for her fans. This she said is in memory of her late uncle Kumar.

Apart from “Jep Sting Naina”, Hunter will also be doing his 2008 hit, “Bring It” and some of his other past hits. He said he loves adding comedy to his songs to make people laugh and dance at the same time.
