However both swimmers failed to make an impression in their respective events with Mc Leod not progressing past the preliminaries. Mc Leod was sixth in the Men’s 50m butterfly heat, touching the wall in 25.06 seconds, .03 seconds slower than his personal best.

The former National Open record holder finished 81st overall. The heat was won by Michael Navara of Slovakia who clocked 24.26 to place 54th.

World record holder Rafael Munoz of Spain rolled into the semi-finals with ease, eclipsing the previous championship record of 22.90 set by Roland Schoeman of Russia in 2005. Schoeman booked his place in the “semis” as well with the same time.

Bahamian Elvis Burrows performed creditably but did not advance into the semi-final. He swum a time of 23.74 to place 26th overall. Other Caribbean competitors include Shaune Fraser of the Cayman Islands who was 59th in 24.35. Jamaica’s Brad Hamilton and Suriname’s Marcelino Richards tied for 102nd, with a time of 24.35. The 50m butterfly was contested by 204 athletes.

Meanwhile, Kimba Collymore finished 66th in the world, timing 1:14.67 in her heat in the 100m breaststroke. Collymore, swimming in heat four out of lane seven did not make it into the semi-finals.
