Caledonia edge Ma Pau 1-0 in ‘Big Six’ football

Action was in Round Three, Match Day Two of the Digicel Pro League’s Big Six competition. In the 20th minute, Edwards was on hand to collect a neat pass from midfielder Kester Jacobs, who intercepted a clearance on the left from national Under-20 midfielder Curtis Gonzales, and the forward drilled his left-footer to the right of Jamaican goalkeeper Shane Mattis.

The goal atoned for an earlier miss when the forward, after receiving a precise ball from midfielder Stephan David, took too long to shoot and his effort was blocked by the goalie.

Ma Pau, who lost 3-1 at Macoya to leaders Joe Public on Sunday, hardly got into stride, and they could have fallen further behind when Walter Moore’s left-sided cross was missed by both Edwards and veteran Guyanese striker Randolph Jerome, and Abdallah Phillip horrendously mis-kicked, with only Mattis to beat.

Trevin Caesar, one of the season’s impressive debutants, made a run at the Caledonia defence and found an on-rushing Kevin Molino, but the Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 midfielder had his attempted shot denied by a sliding tackle from Caledonia’s Guyanese skipper Charles Pollard.

Another evergreen Caledonia player, Kendall Velox (who replaced an injured Jerome) cleverly faked Gonzales and the uniquely-named Bahamian defender Happy Hall before having his right-footer crash off the crossbar.

But Caesar, with three minutes of regulation time remaining, could have knotted up the scores as he collected a defence-splitting pass from his captain Lyndon Andrews, moved past Marcus Ambrose but skied his right-footer overbar.

Caledonia remains in second place, but they are now one point adrift of Joe Public in the League points table. W Connection won their second straight game, as they blanked Defence Force 2-0 at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Brazilian defender Eder Gilmar Aras and recently-signed 22-year-old Mexican forward Jose Diaz got their names on the score-sheet, in the 21st and 39th minutes.

The victory saw Connection move to the top of the Big Six points standings, while they are now third in the overall League table.

The scheduled encounter between Joe Public and Jabloteh, also at Macoya, was cancelled as a number of Jabloteh players are currently afflicted with viral-like symptoms.

The Big Six features the top six teams after Round Two of the season, with the squads battling for both the Big Six and the overall league crown– Jabloteh won both titles last year.

Round Three, Match Day Three will take place on October 17 with action at both Macoya and the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella.

A double-header will be contested in Macoya with Caledonia meeting Jabloteh at 5 pm while Connection will oppose Ma Pau two hours later. And, at Marabella, Joe Public will face Defence Force from 6 pm.
