Unsung hero Sally Edwards dies

She left behind a grieving husband, Ziad Mohammed and her five children. The couple was married 23 years ago.

Her daughter Evana, who is heartbroken on the lost of her mother, spoke out about a woman who rose to the top of the ladder but came down because of illness and was neglected by society. “When she became sick and could not sing, none of her so-called colleagues looked for her. She was so great that she sang with India’s top playback singers who came here and she was one who made the trip to New York to accompany the best from India yet no one visited her on her sick bed,” a grief-stricken Evana said, adding that the world is full of people who would smile with you only when you are healthy and strong and can give to society. “When you fall you are on your own,” Evana stated. She is concerned that her mom who had a very hard childhood, could not get the recognition she deserved. Evana who spent a lot of time with her mother said she was a loud and spontaneous person who would laugh at everything and would bring joy to those around her by doing so. “She was very emotional as she would cry when she saw movies. She was the type of person who cared sincerely for the well-being of others, only she did not get the same in return,” Evana said.

In 1996 Sally got a throat infection and doctors told her to stop singing for a while until her throat healed. After leading a busy life for eight years she had to cut all her shows and returned to her home in St Augustine.

It was during this time that she became a Born Again Christian, having baptised in the Chaguanas Pentecostal Church. She spent a lot of time in worship and in the company of her children. She was also diagnosed with diabetes.

Mastana Bahar producer Khayal Mohammed extended condolences to Sally’s family.
