Animae Caribe begins today
There is a lot to look forward to, and beginning today, theatre goers will experience some of the best anime shorts internationally and throughout the region. Festival director, Camille Selvon Abrahams said, “Caribbean and international works from countries like Norway, Hong Kong, Egypt, USA, Scotland, Canada, Australia, Spain, Argentina, United Kingdom. India, Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia and this country will be highlighted.”
She noted, “We have hosted over the last nine years, Oscar winning and nominated animators like Daniel Greaves, Erica Russell and Disney experienced directors Like’ ‘Proud Family’ Bruce Smith. This year we are proud to have Bill Plymton visit our shores and celebrate and share with us in the Caribbean, together with a host of other celebrated animators and professionals in the field. She said the Anime Caribe artform is bing used not only to entertain but to expose and empower local talent.
Last year Anima Caribe was used as a tool for rehabilitation for inmates at the Youth Training Centre (YTC). Selvon Abrahams said the project had been successful and will be used as a model for other Caribbean islands.
“Our work does not begin with the festival but all through the year we promote the artform. Recently we conducted a workshop at YTC for young offenders and after one day of training the ‘lads’ as they are called produced a compilation that was so touching that we decided to enter it for most promising animator category.
We were all so moved by this that we are opening the festival with the screening of ‘The Journey’ by the lads of YTC,” Selvon Abrahams said.
She said both the documentary based on the inmates responses to anime and their animated shorts will be screened at NAPA today (Monday).
Today will also be a full day of pre- school animations, storytelling and “Trinity the Turtle” by Trinity SMART, and giveaways at NALIS audio visual room.
Various workshops will also be hosted at selected venues over the course of the six-day festival. At hand to facilitate one of the workshops will be Michael De Souza, the Trinidadian-born creator of “Rastamouse,” – an animated reggae-singing mouse that has become a children’s television hit on the BBC.
