Beware of fluorescent light-bulbs
However, as it does so, it also emits ultra-violet (UV) rays and industry testing in the UK has revealed that about one in every five of these bulbs emit an inordinately high amount: enough to make it a health hazard. In the UK the industry standard requires that each bulb be fitted with a ‘prismatic diffuser’ which filters out the UV component. Such standards as far as I am aware, may not apply in all the countries that manufacture these bulbs.
If no such assurance is indicated on the label then it is recommended that one should not sit closer than 12 inches from such bulbs since by doing so one may experience their harmful effects. Many conditions are characterised by photosensitivity — sensitivity to the UV rays in ordinary sunlight exposure — and there have been many reports of adverse effects from these bulbs such as joint pains, lupus like and other types of rashes, headaches etc.
They are rendered safer when the tubes are covered by a built-over shield which makes them look just like an ordinary incandescent bulb or when there is a prismatic diffuser fitted to the device.
Since one of the long term effects of UV exposure can be skin cancer for those with the relevant risk profile, care should be exercised with regard to exposure. The long-term effect of exposure in children has not yet been fully assessed and so due caution should be exercised. Of course it goes without saying that extreme caution should be exercised in the event of breakage because of the mercury content.
I am unaware of our own industry standard with regard to this technology, but I thought we should be reminded of the health related concerns.
