Teen killed in car accident lauded as an inspiration
Kai Lewis, 16, was killed in a vehicular accident on Wednesday in Fyzabad. The driver of the “PH” car he was in, Nicholas Phill, 25, also died in the accident at Robert Hill, Fyzabad, in which three other passengers suffered injuries. It was an emotional Shawn Lewis, who, speaking to mourners at the Kingdom Faith World Life Ministries in Siparia, said, “These drivers need to take their time.”
Lewis, in paying tribute to cousin Kai, said that he (Kai) was an inspiration to him and many others at school. He told mourners that Kai would always be seen playing his guitar and composing songs. Lewis who shared a close bond with his deceased cousin said Kai had a deep love for music. “He was also working towards becoming an offshore welder and he studied hard,” Lewis said.
A tearful Lewis continued, “This is real hard for me. It real hard. Who would I talk to now?”
The church was yesterday packed to capacity with family members, friends and students in uniform who came to bid their final farewell. Relatives described Kai as a loving individual. In delivering the eulogy, Kai’s aunt, Kay Lewis-Clarke, said there were many questions surrounding her nephew’s death, but only God had the answers. Kai’s schoolmates of the Fyzabad Intermediate Anglican Secondary School, who attended, were seen comforting each other in tears at the funeral service. They wore their school uniform and had “RIP Kai” written on their shirts.
The accident occurred at about 3.30 pm on Wednesday evening. Kai was seated in the front passenger seat while three schoolgirls sat in the back. Phill, 25, resided at Sudama Alley, Robert Hill, Siparia. The other three passengers, Abiola Henry, Akayla Toby and Anthony Reyes, remain warded at the San Fernando General Hospital in serious condition. All three are pupils of Fyzabad Intermediate Anglican School.
