3 prison officers suspended over jailbreak

According to reports, the officers received their suspension letters on Monday.

Calls to Justice Minister Prakash Ramadhar, Prisons Commissioner Sterling Stewart and president of the Prison Officers’ Association, Ceron Richards, for comment went unanswered up until press time.

On July 24, three prisoners, Allan “Scanny” Martin, Hassan Atwell, and Christopher Selby, staged a daring escape from the Port-of-Spain jail. During that escape, PC Sherman Maynard was killed.

Martin who was cornered at a guard booth at the Port-of- Spain General Hospital was shot and killed by police, while Atwell was killed by unknown assailants a day later.

Selby surrendered to police and has been charged for Maynard’s murder and nine additional offences relating to the prison break. A police investigation remains underway.
