Statement Pieces
The location for the statement piece is very important. Choose somewhere where there is heavy traffic. More than likely you would have paid a lot for this piece, so why not show it off? What about placing the statement piece in the entry way? As you open the door there is a piece that says “look at me!” Or will you tease the viewer and have them be wowed as they enter the living room or dining room? Just keep in mind that not everyone is going to like your style. Imagine all the conversations there will be whether it is positive or not.
Why not place the statement piece in an open area? In this way, the piece stands on its own for all to see. Another idea is to build the room around the piece.
Here you will be incorporating it into the d?cor and careful thought has to be placed in choosing the complementary d?cor for the piece. Always remember that design is about balance, so avoid having the rest of the room overpower the main attraction.
Create clusters in the room with the statement piece to try to blend it with the d?cor.
Contrasting where the d?cor around is the complete opposite in style and essence is one way to accomplish this. If the piece is old, place it around new elements. If it is geometric, place it in a more organic setting. Clashes of elements can work but you will need a keen eye for design to pull it off. Of course you can play it safe and match colours and patterns. Nothing is wrong with that once the design is balanced.
Be adventurous mix patterns, large prints with small prints. Scale should always be playing like a record in your mind. Remember the statement piece should stand out. The scale of all the elements must work together to maintain balance.
Play with colour. It is always best to choose colours in odd numbers. For instance, using three or five colours in a space. However, if you are not confident with working with colour, keep it simple with three colours.
Always take time to stop and look at what you have accomplished. Is it coming together the way you thought? Are you highlighting your statement piece or is it hidden by all the other elements in the room? This is your space so you can take time to develop your ideas. If you are not satisfied, examine the room area by area. Look at which aspects are, or are not working. Sometimes just removing of shifting one element can make the world of a difference.
