Browne holds off Bramble for National Keirin
With just 250m remaining, Browne, the US-based Pennsylvania Lightning representative leapt out of the bunch with the finish line in sight. Bramble, alert to Browne’s attacking ploy, was his closest rival as the duo pushed their pedals leaving the rest of the pack scampering to catch. On the final straight, Bramble seemed to have rounded his Arima counterpart, but Browne found another gear to ride away with the national crown.
The much anticipated Junior Men’s Keirin did not disappoint as the crowd was on their feet in the final 150m when they saw a three-way battle between Nicholas Paul (Breakaway), Chaquille Henry (AWCC) and Je’Land Sydney (Kallisto FCV). Abreast rounding the last turn, Paul proved too strong for his local rivals as he rode away from the pair with Henry edging Sydney on the line for second place.
Meanwhile in the opening event – Elite Women’s Keirin final – Keiana Lester (Bike Smith) trumped compatriot Kollyn St George (Breakaway) to claim top honours. The two national cyclists rode valiantly and could not be separated, forcing an official result from the photo finish to assess who would be crowned champion. In the end, Lester pipped her national Team Sprint partner to gold. Teniel Campbell (Team DPS) had to settle for bronze while Aziza Browne (Arima Wheelers) CC) was fourth overall. In the Junior Women’s Keirin, Jhordan St George was able to defeat Dominique Lovell (Arima Wheelers) for the coveted crown.
Additionally, the Omnium for Junior and Elite Men completed its first three events and neither can be decided with just two points separating first from second in the Junior Men between Tyler Cole (Team DPS) and Jabari Whiteman (Southclaine).
In the Elite Men, Justin Roberts (Team DPS) also holds a slender two-point lead over Sheldon Ramjit (Hummingbirds) going into the second day of Omnium competition.
Up to press time last night, the third day of competition pedalled off with the Omnium coming to conclusion with the Flying 250m, 1km Time Trial and Points Race while the sprinters return for the Flying 200m and quarter-final rounds
