Ship Ahoy - Boat Ride Attire 101

The average time frame of a boat ride party – short and sweet really – is normally between three and four hours. This is just enough time to make an entrance, get a slight buzz (we’re definitely not about that drunk life) and party your stress away. Although there is no specific season for boat ride parties in our country, there is a feeling of carefree abandon that accompanies the July/ August vacation that makes attending one of these parties during this time all the more exciting. So ladies, I thought it prudent to address the question uppermost in our minds when presented with an invitation… What to wear? In tackling this proposition, I’ve drawn inspiration from some of my favourite fashion and style bloggers, personal stylists and trendy “it girls”, who are all super models on the largest runway of all time… The streets.

On to the night. Whether the vessel is large or small, think scaled down version of night club clothing. Sexy dresses, classy jumpsuits, or exciting two piece coordinates will fit right in. The images below give just a snippet of choices at your disposal.

You will have noticed that I have not mentioned choice of footwear in any of the options discussed. I opted to deal with this separately so that I could give it the attention it rightly deserves. After all is said and done, your choice of footwear has the potential to make or break your boat ride experience.

Now I am a self proclaimed high-heeled junkie, literally rising to the occasion, almost nine out of ten times that I leave home. I am however, extremely uncomfortable with the notion of wearing heels to a boat ride. The combination of being constantly in motion, balancing on 4 to 6 inch heels while imbibing alcohol is a recipe for disaster, in my opinion. There are many women who do not share this view. More and more I am seeing pairs of stilettos, pumps and ridiculously high heeled sandals bubbling, twerking , rocking and tottering their way to boat ride fame. If this floats your boat, I tip my sailor’s hat to you. My advice to those strongly opposed to wearing flats would be to consider a wedged heel or platform heel which will provide more stability. After all, when Salty lyrically asks if “you wah speed”, you want to be confident in all your wining glory.

Now that I’m ready to drop the anchor on this week’s offering, I hope you’re ready to test your sea legs at one or two of the plethora of marine parties being thrown. Whatever you decide to wear… rock it like a boat ride!
